Pigs like these are what give good cops a bad name!

Unbelievable! Unforgivable! Inexcusable! For huge, overweight grown pigs to do this to defenseless, peaceful demonstrators! Not even animals are treated as maliciously as these students were. Great example of why SOME shouldn’t be given any kind of power.

Makes one wonder what carnage these pigs do to harmless people when they know there are no witnesses or cameras around.

Arrogant pigs like these have no business dealing with people, much less carrying firearms, and should be placed out in police station warehouses where all they deal with are crates. These pigs have itchy fingers, and are waiting for any excuse to shoot someone.

Yeah, I heard about this earlier. Thank you for the video. Sigh...the police are losing it for sure. Not just this, but just about everywhere any demonstration is being done.

It's frightening when American citizens start experiencing police brutality only because peacefull demonstrators are demonstrating!

I'm amazed at how my dear LJ friend, (dave) could possibly condone such actions as shown in this video.
Nov. 21st, 2011 10:04 pm (UTC)
Boo fucking hoo. They were told to disperse and they refused. What do you want, the police to sit there flipping their wrists and going, "Come on, come ooooooonnnn!"

Call me when something like this happens.

EDIT: And another thing, where was all this outrage when the feds stormed the house and seized Elian Gonzales? The people who are now siding with these protesters sat back, yawned, and said, "Good riddance," when heavily armed agents pointed guns at the family and ripped the little boy away. But I guess now it's important since it's rich white people protesting instead of brown people trying to protect their family.

Oh dave, how can you condone such PIG brutality?!

There is absolutely no excuse for such actions. The pepper spray containers were more like tanks than bottles. The PIG ran out of pepper sprayed, then asked the other PIG to start pepper spraying with his! The PIGS weren’t in any kind of danger whatsoever!

I’m so disappointed in you, dave!

That old bag of bones (Chancellor) should be forced to resign!

I have a contrasting opinion of the situation. I'm one to call a cop a pig pretty quickly when they're doing something abusive or inappropriate. I love reading their obituaries when the bad ones got what's coming to them.

But here? I don't see abuse. I'm not really sympathetic to the protesters -here, in full slactivism mode by apparently linking arms to provide a resistance and block a public or private access way.

Right to peacefully protest? Sure. Get the fuck off the sidewalk and stand up and chant and wave signs for all the good it feels like it's doing. Even being a humanly linked chain or blockade might be called 'peaceful' vs. throwing fists or lighting fires, but regardless, it's doing 2 things:

1. impeding a walkway and inconveniencing others who don't know or care about the protest issue, which is selfish and stupid to do.

2. Remaining where they are when asked verbally to move, likely more than once, and maybe even with warning, but the warning isn't necessary. If you can't listen to a police officer's verbal commands and obey, why bitch about the result? Anyone who blocks a sidewalk and links arms is not only aware of this, but expecting and inviting it, and then playing 'victim' (such as the 84 year old woman in Seattle who got peppered. Get the fuck out of the mix, granny!) as support for whatever cause they're rallying for.

Me? I think I've seen more police who are abusive with tasers, or fists and hand-to-hand tactics for pain and control of a situation. Pepper spray has a pretty low incidence of death or serious consequence, compared to many other forms of response. Some sharp cookie can dig up the stats on that from a credible source, I'm sure. And you can bet the protesters are smart enough to have their medic volunteers, who have remedies for the pepper spray exposure.

But more to the point - the cops didn't push it. You hose down some sidwalk-layin' hippies and they either get up and move (mission accomplished!) or you arrest them if they don't, or if they resist. That's not really abuse. To see the cops become violent, or further escalate when there's no violence aimed at them, then I'd hope the student mob gets up and drops them all. But both sides kept their cool. The cops know when they're outnumbered and back off, instead of charge with clubs or rubber bullets and grenades. The students don't do more than yell. All in all, win/win going on here.

I'm more inclined to see cops abuse people over on the east coast. Seems like in areas such as DC, they show up with riot clubs and swing first, forget pepper spray. THAT, to me, is extreme. Pepper spray was the least they could do here, and it accomplished the task. For once, I'm surprised the cops could be so subdued.

Maybe PG and them others would have rather seen the Police use Water cannons like they did back during the race Riots or maybe Billy Clubs like were used against the long haired maggot infested hippy freaks and American commies during the Vietnam War protests.

As was said they were given a lawful order by the police to disburse.

Heh, I forget how you like to throw raw meat to the rabid dogs in hope for a Pavlovian response. I am in contact with a few friends who are grad students at UC davis and the story is clear cut. The protest was a peaceful protest from the beginning, note this is not an occupy wall street protest it was one with valid concerns that were being systematically ignored by regents, provosts, etc.

The typical student at UC Davis is either an agriculture or veterinary medicine major. They're not typically radical, spoiled kids with nothing better to do. They have career goals that are not designed to make them wealthy. Also many of your detractors will use the "taxpayers waste of money" as an excuse but the average college student does have more of an intrinsic right on a public campus , because not only do they or their parents pay the same taxes the non students do they also pay tuition on top of that and the non-residents pay the tax difference in their own tuition so the campus is there to serve them.
But that's not even the crux of it. Sure, with civil disobedience there are recognized consequences in this case the students in this protest movement were versed in knowledge they may very well be arrested, that's what UC Davis police are trained to do according to their own policy on escalating use of force continuum. Students linked arm in arm with their heads down followed a protocol right out of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr's book on passive resistance. They offered no violent resistance, nor did they respond in a threatening manner after they were sprayed. According to the UC Davis police policy on the use of chemical deterrents and other methods of force it's clearly delineated and indicated :

"A. When determining whether or not to apply any level of force and evaluating whether an officer has used reasonable force, a number of factors should be taken into consideration. These factors include, but are not limited to:

1) The conduct of the individual being confronted (as reasonably perceived by the officer at the time)."

The individuals disobeyed, but the escalating use of force continuum states they can detain and arrest these students and that was not even followed by the police they used a method of coercion that , according to their policy is reserved for mob and crowd control when the situation is out of control or their is fear of violence.

Also the actions are illegal according to California precedent in case law "HEADWATERS FOREST DEFENSE v. COUNTY OF HUMBOLDT" in which officers used pepper spray on logging protestors who offered no violence and were sprayed mainly because they were chained to the trees.

Lastly, as a followup to how these students reacted after the spraying incident please watch this video and TRY to make an argument we're dealing with dangerous or violent students?

As you know (I think you know?) I don't "do" the political or religious thing on LJ much. (I have oft used LJ as my emotional "hammock"!)

I can't tell you how hurt to my heart I was watching that cop spray tear gas (meant for wide dispersement on CROWDS - NOT individuals faces!!!) on someone else's well-meaning child. My kid is a student, just like them. My well -meaning baby.

It made me sick.

I keep thinking "Kent State - Kent State". Because this won't really become history until they kill. And they will - soon I imagine.

Stop the world. I wanna get off. :-((
Nov. 22nd, 2011 02:21 am (UTC)
It pays to learn facts before you make statements. Tear gas is not used by law enforcement for small groups, what you saw being used was Pepper Spray, It is made to spray into the face. A law enforcement officer must be hit in the face with pepper spray before he is allowed to use it. I have been exposed to Tear Gas, Mace and Pepper Spray. All three are irritating but are survivable. ALSO, the Kent State fiasco was NOT Police Officers it was the Ohio National Guard, that was called out by Governor James Rhodes when requested by then Kent Mayor Leroy Satrom.

Most Police officers are good honest folk doing a dangerous job to protect us. But you did get Cops who abuse or over react to a situation, was this one of those situations? It's being reviewed and then we'll get the facts. Pepper spray is nasty stuff but it's a lot better than tasers and billy clubs. I think the situation could have been handled in a better way.
Another thing, sometimes what the police do to control a violent person can look like police brutality and with cameras everywhere it gets recorded and spread around the world without knowing the facts but i'm certaintly not saying this was the case here.
Nov. 23rd, 2011 12:35 am (UTC)
Most Police officers are good honest folk
Cops have been 'dumbed down'. The majority of police forces have maximum IQ standards, e.g. they won't hire someone with more that a 115/120 IQ because 'they're too smart and will get bored' and it costs too much to train another officer. The nation average IQ for cops is about 104.

Wow, you have so many enablers of abuse posting on your LJ. I know there are people out there like that, but it's still shocking to see.

It's like watching a woman that gets beaten by her husband defend him.

These protests do a great job exposing the abuse of the state and the enablers who allow such behavior to be the norm.
Dec. 7th, 2011 04:41 am (UTC)
Have another look at the video. If you in the Army had been surrounded like that, what would YOU have done?

Contemptible that they did that, and contemptible that you support the protesters.
