Why Is bin Laden Alive?

2. California will vote on Proposition 19 which if passed, it will legalize pot use as a means of enjoyment. I am for legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, but to legalize it for recreation; I am totally against it.

I say ABSOLUTELY!! What do you say? Why? (Optional)

4. I absolutely love Lady Gaga! Do you? Why? (Optional)

5. My respects to ALL religions, but out of respect for those who died in the Twin Towers, and for their families, I feel the Muslim mosque should be built much further away.

Are you for or against the mosque being built so close to ground zero? Why? (Optional)

monkies...
First of all, I recently paid for a bunch of monkey images, and ever thing I downloaded one, I thought of you! :o)

You are among those I consider to be SUPER intelligent (I’m so darn lucky!), and I just about always agree with you, but not this time. I've mentioned before that I had two cousins who smoked marijuana, and after a while, they graduated to whatever is out there that kills. They were both brought up with just about the best parents possible. There devastation continues to this day.

There ARE some adult Americans who are totally irresponsible when it comes to pot, and alcohol.

I know of the perfect solution in getting those cops back on the streets; seriously tax the filthy rich according to their astronomical income. I'm all for keeping every single one of our police officers, and will go so far as to say that they and firefighters deserve a hefty pay raise.

As for those who smoke cigarettes, don't they realize the irreversible damage they're causing their poor lungs?

If anyone thinks I'm a little miss goody shoes because I don't smoke cigarettes, and have never smoked pot, I'm not. I'm the best Margarita maker on this planet, and on social occasions, I drink a couple with gusto! :o)

I'm honored by your esteem. :-)

-I bet your cousins also drank milk and ate bacon before they moved onto harder drugs. But your assumption that it was the weed that led them to the harder stuff has as much evidence as saying dairy or swineflesh led them to the harder stuff. Especially given the research that shows that pot is often used by junkies coming off the harder stuff. And yeah, if someone is smoking weed rather than shooting heroin, I think that's a million times better for them AND society.

Now, as long as pot is illegal, it's sold on the black market with all the other stuff that's sold there. So the very act of buying weed under those circumstances will tend to bring people into closer contact with the nastier chemicals. And then if you're on a self destructive path, you're now in contact with the more destructive stuff.

When I go into one of the dispensaries and pay sales tax on the weed I buy, there's no crack or powder cocaine or heroin available at the counter. Neither are there any minors allowed in past the ID check. Just like at the liquor store.

But I know exactly which shitty neighborhoods a 13-yr-old can go to buy crack on the street 24/7. Those are the ones with all the gunshots ringing out. Oh yeah, no one's shooting up the dispensaries. But people do wait patiently on line for their turn.

There ARE some adult Americans who are totally irresponsible when it comes to pot, and alcohol.

Indeed. But so what? The are many more Americans who are quite responsible with it. I'd argue that the responsible ones outnumber the fuck-ups several times over.

SOme people are likely to fuck their lives up on something eventually. Why should the rest of us be prohibited from, indeed criminalized by, enjoying something that is not interfering with our lives.

This is a free society, and we allow adults to do much riskier things than smoke weed. Things like ride motorcycles, scuba dive, climb mountains, get in a car and drive on an American highway, and other pursuits that have a MASSIVELY GREATER likelihood of causing permanent harm/disfigurement/death than smoking weed. Year in, year out, each of those activities kill infinitely more people* than ganja does.

Yet the legal right to risk your life doing each of those activities (and more) is unchallenged. Does it not seem odd?

The reason so many cops and former cops are in favor of repealing prohibition and regulating drugs is that bottom line, having them illegal causes more harm than having them regulated:
-Law Enforcement Against Prohibition

-As San Jose's retired chief of police and a cop with 35 years experience on the front lines in the war on marijuana, I'm voting yes on Prop. 19.

I'm in favor of harm reduction. And bottom line, even factoring in people like your cousins, I think more harm is done by having drugs illegal and controlled by criminals who sell it on the street as opposed to being regulated and taxed and sold in licensed stores. And that's not even adding the positive benefits of pot to the equation.

I also advocate treating drug addiction as a public health problem rather than a law-enforcement problem. That would reduce both the monetary cost and human suffering massively. But that's a whole 'nuther discussion. ;-)

*Given than using cannabis hasn't killed a single person in the thousands of years humans have been cultivating and using it, the mountain climbing death/Cannabis death ratio is X/0, and anything divided by zero is ∞ or some other irrational number.
