Wal-Mart: Love It? Hate It?

Wal-Mart: Love It? Hate It?

Wal-Mart Shopper?

Dear LJ friends,

ALL of you received the greatest compliment possible by one of my LJ friends. He said, "you have very clever, very insightful persons as your LJ buddies!" And guess what?! He's RIGHT!

He posed this very interesting question for me, and I'd really appreciate your answer and thoughts:

Wal-mart: love it or hate it? Why?

Complete indifference. I saw that episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit where they did the expose on Wal-Mart, and found out that it's actually a pretty decent place. Their workers make much higher than minimum wage, compared to the workers in those businesses that compete against them. I found that interesting

I do ALL my shopping at
I believe I've been to Wal-Mart about five times in my whole life!

I do ALL my shopping at Sam's, Costco, and sometimes shop at some neighborhood grocery store. Oh, and of course, my FAVORITE exclusively elite boutique store, the 2nd hand thrift shop! :o)

My own personal thoughts about Wal-Mart are, and I may be wrong, but I feel it has been responsible for many small independent store owners going out of business.

I don't care for Walmart. Their parking lot here is over-crowded and accident prone.
I dread having to drive there.
May. 10th, 2007 07:51 pm (UTC)
I hate trying
You're right! I hate trying to find a parking space there!

It depends on what I get there. I found some nice t-shirts there at Walmart, and I've got some Xbox 360 games for a good price.

However I'm under the suspicion that some of the items there are secrectly Walmart brand, which for example, let say you buy a DVD, well the DVD has some scenes taken out, so they can make it cheaper for Walmart customers, just a suspicion
May. 10th, 2007 10:24 pm (UTC)
But it actually doesn't make commercial sense to spend time and money paying someone to remove scenes from a DVD, then the expense of making a separate DVD master to manufacture new discs with, with a new production run, etc. So why does Wal-mart make distributors or manufacturers do it? To appease their conservative Christian base. Then they still get to sell it cheap because they are big and can sell big volume.

I love Walmart! (and I don't know why)

I must love it though because every time I go there, I end up walking out with a lot more than I had planned to get. Just walking through it's like, oh, I need some new movies, and some microwave popcorn... oh, don't forget the soda.. etc etc etc...

really matters!
Well, as long as you enjoy shopping there, that's was really matters! :o)

I don't think I have ever shopped in one. I probably would check them out if there was one near me and then decide. I know that some people are very upset with the way they use their muscle to get huge price concessions from their suppliers. However, as long as there is a large consumer market that is more fixated on price, this will be the case, whether it be Wal-Mart or some other company.

I do know that many little shops in towns
I do know that many little shops in towns like New Mexico had to close down because they couldn't compete when Wal-Mart was built. I'm pretty sure they dislike Wal-Mart intensely, and I don't blame them if they do.
May. 10th, 2007 08:10 pm (UTC)
I like (not love, just like) Wal-Mart. Sometimes I buy things there that aren't available elsewhere, whether it's new products (I saw Tostito's flour tortilla chips there first) or stuff that they're still carrying that other places are not.

On one of the RARE times
On one of the RARE times I went to Wal-Mart, I found the groceries were way too expensive.

I will say this; all their employees are very courteous.

I dislike wal-mart. I think their business practices are very predatory and damaging to the regions they exist.

Their practices to exploit workers by demanding they don't log all the hours their work, or keeping their hours just low enough to not have to insure them.

Then there is the effect the company has on suppliers, which you can hear about here:

There are actually a number of good books on the evils or Walmart.

I can't say I've ever set foot in one, and I'm planning on not ever shopping with them.
May. 10th, 2007 08:35 pm (UTC)
I may be mistaken
They don't have insurance for their employees?! That is unexcusable!

I may be mistaken, but I believe I once read that the Wal-Marts in my city, were caught hiring illegals.

Thanks for the link!

I hate the british flavour of Wal-Mart... It's called Asda, and it's got the most annoying ad campaign ever!
May. 10th, 2007 08:46 pm (UTC)
Wow! I had no idea you all had a Wal-Mart, also!
May. 10th, 2007 08:34 pm (UTC)
Hate Wal-Mart with a passion. Shady business practices, employee abuse, refusal to allow workers to organize, just to name a few.
May. 10th, 2007 09:54 pm (UTC)
it looks like
I've been reading a few more comments about Wal-Mart, and it looks like you're not the only one that hates the place!

Oh Wal-Mart is evil, but I never said I didn't get in the bed with the devil now and then :)

My nephew took a job there when he was 18 and he told me about "the tape" Which is the infamous orientation tape that tries to put a friendly face on how bad unions are for everyone. All businesses are supposed to be hostile to Unions- that's expected, but Wal-Mart has used so methods that the Sopranos writers could get story ideas from.

Discount retail stores are good for the economy, I love Meijers (a Michigan based family owned chain) Target, etc. I only "like" Wal-Mart bue they're still evil. :) And it wouldn't bug me so much if the supermarket that I always went to moved when Wal-Mart went up down the street. That's my trade-off for loving free markets.

Can someone please tell me why on earth George H. W. Bush gave Sam Walton the Medal of Freedom?

May. 11th, 2007 12:07 am (UTC)
I'm FOR the Union
But somebody here said that there are some Wal-Marts that are union.

Oh, and I also love Big Lots and the Dollar Stores around here!

By and by, I'm FOR the Union!! I think I'll make a future post about THE UNION. Seriously.

I call them the Evil Empire...but like someone said, you can't always turn down the devil in bed...or something like that...:)

Their business practices are shady, the thing I hate is how they squeeze their suppliers so much, yet if they stand up to Wal-mart too much, they give you the boot and then you lose a major customer..sigh, there is no winning...

I do shop there sometimes, but not as often as I once did.

Hello there. Hope you don't mind me peeking in. I was browsing around myself and happened upon you. Must say I'm quite impressed with all that you've done. Tried getting into the Army myself but my eyesight was too bad. Anyway, hope you don't mind if I add you.

I refuse to shop there...I think their practices are a cancer on earning ability for their workers, they've already taken action against their workers getting organized, nor are they paying their suppliers much per unit. Dealing in bulk means that only companies large enough to feed their supply needs will be able to afford the bulk prices, which means that smaller companies often get shut out or forced to charge unsustainable rates.

All this for cheaper products? Just because we don't see the damage outright doesn't mean that damage isn't being done.

so many different viewpoints
Had my LJ friend not asked me about Wal-Mart, I never would have learned so many different viewpoints about the place. Thanks Stevie!

May. 10th, 2007 10:08 pm (UTC)
I like walmart, and here is why.

Before Walmart moved into my town you had to travel great distances to buy most non-staple goods. Also local shopkeeps charged outrageous rates for everything. Without competition people charged whatever they wanted for items. I can also say that before Walmart nobody in retail in my town earned better than federal minimum wage.
May. 10th, 2007 10:25 pm (UTC)
I like shopping at Wal-mart while I also demonize them for what they've done. Both.
