This picture was taken by me at the J. Paul Getty Museum
at the Getty Center. I have quite a few of them and
will start posting one at a time.
Hope you enjoy them!

I've been surfing the web in a big way lately.
I have all types of protection for my computer,
and have noticed a little popup letting me know
a couple of times, that SPYWARE has been blocked
when I've entered certain web sites.

I have a question. What is SPYWARE?

Spy ware is computer software that collects personal information about users without their informed consent. There are several ways to collect the information but take it from me Spy ware is not desired. There
are spy ware detector programs available. I have no recommendations.

It is exactly as it sounds. It collects everything from what ads you look at to the web sites you visit and how often, etc... Nasty Nasty Stuff!!
Use AVG's spyware dectector. www.avg.com
EXCELLENT and unintrusive to you as the user.
Pretty statue!!

I use Lavasoft's Adaware and Microsoft's Defender software almost exclusively. With all the computers that I've cleaned up over the past three years or so, those two programs will catch almost all the common bad stuff and a good portion of the not so common stuff. The other tools I use I won't mention by name because if you play with them and don't know what you're doing, you can mess up your Windows installation.

Find a geek (which I think is a positive term) like myself (too bad you live so far away) and have them clean your computer up if you can't get rid of anything yourself. Or visit a local computer stuff and pay them to do it. Don't pay to install any software since some of that stuff is as bad as the spyware, and it's legit, it slows your computer down quite a bit (like something called Spysweeper - horribly slow program.)

I have SYMANTEC. Will it protect me?

Isn't it against the law to sell spying stuff??

Symantec is a software company that makes things. They have a suite of software that is designed to protect you from viruses and spyware and other things, but I'm personally not a fan of suites. I'd rather have the best this, that and the other, instead of a package of something that includes the best something, and mediocre other things.

Against the law? It's the internet - nothing's against the law. And if it was, it's near impossible to catch someone and make them stop.

I wonder if I should get some more stuff to protect me, along with Symantec. Do you think I should?

Yes, you are so very right about nothing being against the law on the internet! One of these days, I will share with you, when I made my first little homepage, and had it grow big time, and get many visitors to it. My OWN server, found that I'd made it very popular, and they went in and blocked me from my FTP, and the president of the company took over, stealing all of my pages, along with my poetry, my pictures, and changed my affiliates on the site with his own name!

It was among the most devestating things that ever happened to me on the web, and it was the day when I found out that you just can't trust anyone when it comes to business on the net!

What I found strange was, that I had never gotten my little pop up that let me know it had blocked the spyware before, that is until recently when I started surfing these family friendly sites!

I'm trying to retract my steps to see if I can find them.

Yes, that statue was so pretty, and I have many more that I'll be posting for your enjoyment.

Spyware is software that is surreptitiously installed on your computer that reports back to some company what websites you visit, and what ever else they want to know off of your computer. Some is semi-innocent, like just seeing what your surfing habits are, others are more nefarious and try to report you logins, passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

Either way, you would be good to remove the spyware via any means available.
Mar. 4th, 2007 05:09 am (UTC)
I believe I'm safe because I have this little SYMANTEC button that pops up and lets me know the spyware has been blocked.

I do an awful lot of surfing, and had never experienced this before. What's strange about it is that I've recently been surfing spiritual web pages. I'm going to try and re-track my steps and see if I can find the exact urls.

You've visited the Getty? What brought you down to LA? (Assuming you went to the big new one in LA)
Mar. 4th, 2007 04:24 am (UTC)
I had to attend to some business in Oceanside and Costa Mesa, and had a some time left to go to L.A. and visit the museum. I really enjoyed it and took a lot of pictures that I'll be sharing with you.

My parents were at the Getty Museum yesterday with my grandmother. I'm guessing there's more than one, for I'm in LA and you're in Texas

I was in LA not too long ago and had the opportunity of visiting the museum. It was truly awesome!

What a coincidence that I mention the Getty Museum the day after your parents and grandmother visited the place. Hope they took lots of pictures.

I have quite a collection and will be sharing them with you soon.

this is your invitation. good luck.

I won't go to the new one. I call it The Blofeld Museum because it looks like the headquarters of a Bond villain. Every time I drive up the 405 over the Sepulveda Pass, I half expect to see a death ray firing out of one of its towers. lol

But I love the old Getty up the Pacific Coast Highway.

That is so amazing, and must go there one day, since I'm a BIG James Bond Fan.

I was amazed by the size of the Getty Museum, and regret I could only spend about 3 hours there.

I think out of all the museums I went to out in Cali, the Getty museum was by far my favourite. I went several times. :)

I think everyone else here can probably answer the spyware question better than I can.. .but usually it's primarily a marketing tool for companies to see where you've been on the web. Then there are suckers like my ex who use it to get into things they shouldn't.
Mar. 4th, 2007 04:41 am (UTC)
I've only been there once, and I couldn't get over seeing so much beauty. I most definitely want to go again!

Spyware is dangerous!!

I suggest you check out this website: http://www.komando.com/downloads/categories.aspx?cat=Security

This website has a lot of links for free anti-virus, firewall and spyware software. I use ZoneAlarm firwall, AVG anti-virus and Windows Defender spyware detection software.

Also, you can subscribe to daily "tips" and a weekly newsletter. I highly recommend them.

The AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm software are free for personal use, but not free for commercial use. They are good!!! The Window Defender anti-spyware is a Microsoft product. Kim Komando also recommends at least 2 different anti-spyware software.

I have been very pleased so far and I have found the information in her daily tips and weekly newsletter to be very valuable for me. I am NOT a computer expert.
