KOREA, PLAYGIRL, VOICE POST - PART ONE

KOREA, PLAYGIRL, VOICE POST - PART ONE
My life in Korea, with pictures, will consist of many different posts because there are too many pics. You will find my VOICE POST about KOREA at the bottom of this page.

My tour in Korea was filled with some of the most pleasant memories of my life. I was very excited to learn that I would be visiting another part of the world within months after I joined the Army. I arrived eager to take advantage of getting a first hand look at a culture different from my own. I have a number of interesting souvenirs in my home that remind me of Korea.

I was assigned to a military post office in Camp Humphreys which was located near a busy city call Pyungtaek. I felt fortunate to have been assigned to a military instillation where I could observe and mingle with the native Koreans who lived in the city nearby. It was interesting to see how the Koreans went about their daily business. They gave me the impression that most of them are hardworking, polite, and good spirited people. The only Koreans that I was able to communicate with were those who spoke at last some English. That made it difficult for me whenever I ventured out into the country without the company of my fellow soldiers.

STATUTE OF TWO SOLDIERS

The picture of the STATUTE OF BROTHERS has to be my most favorite. When I first saw it, and realized what it signified, it made me cry, and still does. Every time I look at this picture, I ask myself why on earth, we as human beings just can't get along!

Korea used to be one country, but then became divided into two, which split many families apart. Brother fought against brother. The picture signifies two brothers, one fighting for North Korea and the other for the South.

TH STATUE OF BROTHERS

The statue symbolizing the Korean War depicts the past sufferings of the Korean people and their determination to achieve the national harmony, unification and prosperity. The external part of the statue represents the dramatic reunion on an elder brother who was a Republic of Korea Army officer and his younger brother who was a soldier of the North Korean Army on the Korean War battlefield.

Inside the dome is a mosaic picture portraying the spirit of Korean people who have overcome the predicament of the War. Engraved on the floor is a map of 16 allies which assisted the Republic of Korea in the Korean War.

In one of the pictures, you will find directly behind me one of the bunkers found on the Camp Humphreys post. These bunkers were actually used during the Korean War by American soldiers, and are found throughout posts in South Korea.

Should we ever be at war with North Korea, American soldier's go inside these same bunkers with their machine guns, and other weapons to fight the North Koreans.
