MY RIFLE

Awhile back, I posted these pics in the Gun Community.

I recently bought this antique rifle at gun show.
Do you like it? Have any of you seen a rifle like this one before?

This is what's engrave here: MDH, COL
Right above the trigger is engraved: 1892

When I bought it, it had a BIG bayonet. I somehow misplaced it!

I'll soon post pics of other antiques I bought that day.

PART 2 - UPDATE ON ANTIQUE FIREARMS COLLECTIBLE

BEFITTING QUOTES FOR THIS POST:

"Banning gun shows to reduce violent crime will work about
as well as banning auto shows to reduce drunken driving."
- Bill McIntire,
Spokesman for the National Rifle Association

"Gun control has not worked in D.C. The only people who have
guns are criminals. We have the strictest gun laws in the
nation and one of the highest murder rates. It's quicker to
pull your Smith & Wesson than to dial 911 if you're being robbed."
- Lowell Duckett

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of
exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate
exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and
independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and
others of that nature, are too violent for the body and
stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore
be the constant companion of your walks."
- Thomas Jefferson
(1743-1826), 3rd US President, Democrat

Lower the crime rate. . .give everyone a gun and the right to defend themselves. I could have sworn I have the right to bear arms.

But for God's sake, don't shoot like a girl.

((hugs playgirl)) I love guns too.

I had a hard time finding it, but here's the link to that Gun Community that I just this morning decided to check to see. I never received a LJ email letting me know that you had replied to that post!

Do you have any idea how much a rifle like this one would go for? Not that I intend to sell it, just curious. Is it a big problem that I've misplaced the bayonet?

I just took about 35 new pics with my new camera. They have lots of things to see that weren't visible to the human eye or brought out so clearly as with my old digital camera.

I'll post them soon.

I added alot of pictures yesterday in my last LJ entry.
I believe they are much better than the ones I have here.

Well, it's a good thing it didn't turn out to be a rare rifle because I just didn't take good care of it. I decided to paint one of my rooms and splattered drops of white paint all over the rifle.

Thanks for the info., mfree, I really apprciate it!

Look for barrel markings
I am looking at guns from the era, what are the arsenal markings usually on the gun barrel on the right side. I assume it is an early cartridge rilfe as I don't see anywhere to have a percussian cap. Is it single shot. Are there any codes on the webbing of the strap. I have a friend in reinactments that might be able to find the name of this one with that info.

Re: Look for barrel markings
OMG! I took more pics with my new digital camera and there was just no end to all the stuff I found on it! Stuff that's almost invisible to the eye.

I've got about 35 pics and will have to figure out how to post them, but I find a way soon!

I haven't shot a rifle since I was like 10. But this rifle looks pre-world war II for sure... And it looks like it's in good condition... good for you...

Now, is that a falling or drop block breech? I was thinking it looks a lot like a Martini action but I know it isn't one of the variations of the Martini-Henry rifles or carbines fo the British Army. I used to have an ex Indian Army MkIV Martini Henry. Was the bayonet a socket style?

Are there any proofing or service gunsmith markings on the barrel or breech? Are there any typical British Army crown or arrow marrkings and numeral stamoings.

It almost makes me think it's some kind of European version of the Martini. I am assuming the trigger guard does swing down to open the breech. Do you know what calibre it is?

I'm sorry all I have for you are questions, rather than answers. I've been looking in Google at drop blocks, and just getting the MH. I hope you find out what it is.

Very big hugs for you.

Let me find a way how to post about 35 pics I took with my new digital camera. There was almost no ending to the markings and writings that came came out of it that I hadn't seen before because they are almost invisible to the human eye.

I'll post just as soon as I find a way to post because they're going to be slow downloading.

That gun looks familiar. Does it load/eject cartridges by pulling down the trigger guard?

And with it's short length I am betting it is a cavalry gun
