UPDATE: THE PROGNOSIS

The injuries were very terrible.

1. Kitten Before She Was Attacked
2. 1st Time I Noticed Something Wrong With Kitten
3. Missing Kitten Found

I was at the vet's office with the kitten from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.

I'm such a dummy! I thought Davida was a little girl kitten. No! Davida is a little boy! So, I have changed the name to Davy!

His little paw will most likely have to be amputated. Surgery is scheduled on the 18 of this month.

This is what was done this morning:

Examination $33.00
Leukemia/FIV test $37.80
X-Ray Small $40.05
Ear Swab, per ear $9.25
Acarexx (0.01%Ivermectin) Otic $18.02
Penicillin Injection $21.20
Fluids Subcutaneous $15.00
Clavamox Drops $16.10
Bandage Application (feline)$24.75
Rcp (1st) $17.00
Rabies $20.00
Total $252.17
Discount $11.50

PLUS: The operation on the 18th will cost me approximately $600.00 - Yikes!!!

I've been told by my friends that I should have had him put to sleep. There's no way in hell I could have done that.

Jewely and Mickey are so precious! They are both behaving beautifully and are constantly giving little Davy a bunch of sloppy kisses. I'm so proud of them!

I am blessed in many ways. My boss is an animal lover, too. He gave me the whole day off to attend to this kitten. Bless him!

My neighbor is giving me very nasty looks. I'm returning them back even nastier. She better not mess with me, the MUCKING *B**CH!

This is part of my 10 ft. high rod iron fence. The woman's Chihuahua's are so small that they can enter my yard. The chicken wire will be placed all around my fence so those vicious little monsters will never enter my yard again. As long as my cats stay in my yard, they will be totally safe from attacks.

Just as soon as Davy gets his operation and heals, I will get the other stray kittens shots and bring him/her inside to live with us, too. This kitten is too sweet and trusting and I'm afraid something will happen to it. Hopefully, I take her to the vet next month. One things for sure, Grandpa and I will be eating homemade pizza, spaghetti and beans for an awful long time! We won't mind at all!

Somehow I think home-made pizza every day sounds exciting and delicious.

And rice and beans is awesome. I love rice and beans.

Pizza is one of my favorite things to eat. I made this pizza today and Grandpa and I will be eating some for supper!

It truly is a poor mans meal. I make it for only pennies. I make the dough and pizza sauce on Saturdays and freeze them into 3 balls. The toppings are bought at Sams. Mozzarella Cheese, Mushrooms, Green and Red Peppers, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Jalapenos and sometimes Pineapple. I sauté the veggies then sprinkle them on top of pizza. Left over Pizza is refrigerated and eaten for the next 3 days. Delicious!

I love mexican rice and beans, too!!
Hugs my friend!

Yum!

Y'know, looking at the pictures originally, I thought the kitten might have to lose its paw. I'm glad it seems to still be attached in the picture of Davy with cast on.

I'm sure the cast is just holding it in place until the time comes when it must be amputated.

Re: -
If it had to go, it would have had to go already. Holding it in place will do nothing but allow gangrene to set in.

Maybe it was mangled but still receiving healthy blood flow.

Re: -
You're right, his paw is in a cast. Operation couldn't be done the day I took him because his whole leg was infected in a very bad way. He had a very high temperature.

What do you think I should do? On the 18th, if the paw can't be saved, it will be amputated. It's broken in so many pieces. Doctor will try to put it all together. If successful, Davy will still not be able to walk on it ever.

Do you think that if it comes to amputation, I should say no. Davy is doing wonderfully right now. He's so happy and I can see he's not in pain anymore. I would hate to have the amputation and have him go through the horrible pain. He's already been through so much. I will take him on the 18th for the operation for sure, but would you have your kitten's foot amputated. Maybe he could get along throughout his life with it just dangling. Help!

The danger isn't over. The vet found Davy had a horrible infection and very high fever.

I have to give Davy antibotics in the morning and at night.

On the 18th, I have to take him back. That's when he will be operated. His little paw was shattered in a million pieces. He told me that it would cost me alot less if he just amputated the paw, but I told him that I was willing to pay for an operation to try and save it. When he operates, he will see if it will be possible to save, if not, then he will amputate.

I'm giving it alot of thought now, because Davy looks so much better. His temp is down and he's eating alot and is very happy. I'm wondering if maybe when I take him on the 18th, I might tell the vet that under no circumstances do I want his paw amputated. He would go through so much pain, all over again. Lets see what happens on the 18th.

Well, I've spent....quite a bit more money on my cats than I'd like to admit ($3,500 on Lily when she got hit by a car, and $800 on my other now deceased cat when some asshole kicked him and fucked his stomach up) and it's definitely worth it to disregard cost and see if there's any possible way to save the leg. However, if it's simply not possible, I think I'd just amputate it and that'd be that. Yeah, it'll be painful for a little bit, but at least a few weeks afterwards, it'll be clear that he doesn't have to live out his life with a useless appendage strapped to his torso.

That's just my opinion.
And sorry for the language. I get pretty pissed when people mess with my cats like that.

A lot is probably going to have to do with how much the tissue has atrophied due to the infection. Since he's young, it's kind of a 50/50 thing. Sometimes the young will outlast an infection like this just due to being very hearty; but on the other hand, sometimes the immune system isn't developed to a point where it is strong enough to fight it properly.

He doesn't look like that young of a cat, so I'd say keep your hopes up. I'm not much for cats myself, but I know how important a pet can be.

On the other hand, I have seen animals get along just fine after an amputation. I ran into a couple at the park last summer who took in unwanted dogs, and they had two three-legged dogs, and they said that it only takes a few months for the animals to learn to compensate, and then they are just fine. Hell, those dogs were running around more than ours was.

So if you have to have the paw amputated, don't despair. He may very well do just fine without it. Although it would be preferable if it didn't come to that.

I am very sorry to hear about all of this.

I am also glad to see you be productiveand responsible on your end, since the neighbor doesn't seem to have enough of a conscience to try and compromise both your living spaces and those living in them, or even much less to not fucking maddog you after the incident. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Hopefully your minor adjustments are all that will be needed. It would be outragious to have to resort to video surveillance.

You BE COOL, calm and clear headed - you can let that shitbag have the bad karma.

Peace and good health be with you and your little ones.

Tomorrow the chicken wire goes up all around the fence. It will be about 2 1/2 ft. high. I'm sure this will solve my problem. In the meantime, I'll have my dog Cujo tied up right next to the B*'s house. Cujo looks just like the Stephen King's Cujo movie.

I took a pic of Jeweley sleeping right next to the kitten. Be still my heart! I'll post it soon.

Thank you Cris. My little ones are all happy, safe and peaceful for now.
Hugs!

Putting an animal down is easier said than done, especially once you've held them. I hope the operation goes as well as possible!

I do too. The little bones are shattered in many pieces and his whole little leg was infected badly. His temperature was very high, too.

I had a choice of just having his little paw amputated 'cause it would have saved me about $300.00. I told the vet I couldn't have that and to go for the major operation to try and save it. The operation won't guarantee that the paw will be saved, but we at least will try.
Thank you my friend and big hugs!

Yes, he is pretty lucky, considering his injuries.
He has adapted wonderfully to being an indoor kitten.

In a way, it may have been a blessing for him

Free cats...
...Are always the most expensive.

My little Ashcroft, a cat that when found as a kitten with his brother in the alley behind my old apartment wasn’t slated to live past a month do to the injuries sustained prior to finding him has grown up to be the wobbly leader of the pride. Well worth the small fortune it cost to keep him going during the touch and go times.

So while it might be a little rough in the pocket for the next few months, the love you will get in return from Davy and his littermate will equal a fortune in the years to come.

Of course you know that now don’tcha:-)

I got to say, that’s not only one cute kitten, but also one heck of a happy looking one in spite of the trauma it’s suffered. You are an awesome pet parent.

P.S. Kudos on finding the fourth little gumball machine...

Re: Free cats...
I'm becoming more and more immature as the years go by. I've got gumball machines and animals on my mind. Poor Grandpa, he's become just as immature as I am.

OMG! Your cats are so beautiful. Thank God Ashcroft encountered his Guardian Angel (You) All your cats look so sassy and spoiled, but that's what they are for, to spoil rotten, huh!!??

Davy seems to have forgotten all the pain he went through recently. He has taken over one of Mickey and Jeweley's little dog beds. But Mickey and Jewely have improvised by getting in there, too. How strange to see little dogs cuddled up to a kitten.

Yes, money is worthless, unless you use it on little creatures that need your help so much. I just went and bought my winter coat at the 2nd hand store, it cost me $3.99!! I'll be spending over $1,000.00 on a kitten. It's okay, coats can be replaced, but the love of an animal can't!

Love you my friend. Thank God for people like you!

I recently noticed that you had added me, and thought to look over your journal. It's great to see that you are a big time animal lover as well.

It wasn't so great to see that you recently went thru something that happened to me as well. A dew weeks back our black female kitten was attacked by something when she'd snuck out of the house. She managed to make her way back into our garage. but the base of her tail was badly damaged as well as her right hind leg.

Thank goodness my son's GF works for a vet!! Even with the major discount she received, the bill looks to be roughly $1,000. She looks very odd now, because the vet had to amputate her tail. If there's an upside, I can now tell her apart from our black male kitten.

She's to have her stitches out any day now, but she has been just so affectionate since her return home.

Thank you so much my friend for adding me, too!

Sometimes it can be so painful loving animals as we do, huh?
It affects my life in a terrible way, knowing that little
animals are homeless and suffering so. Sometimes, it's just
to hard to bear.

I'm so sorry about your little kitten and I'm so happy she
was found before it was too late. I have had 2 black cats
in my life, too. They were totally wild cats and would
always explore the neighborhood. One day, they never
came back. That's when I swore that I would never permit
myself to love a cat again.

Now I have 7 cats to worry about. I have 10 stray dogs in the back
yard, 2 of them are indoor poodles and are the love of my life.

I've also noticed Davy become very affectionate, just like your
kitten. She looks at me with so much love in her eyes, that
all the expense and time I've recently spent on him has made
it all worth it!

Hugs my LJ friend!
