Bill Maher Insults Pope & Attack America's Catholics,
Operation, Income Taxes, Interest Rates, Kittens

1. The more you work, the more you’re penalized, the more you're screwed. Why can't we poor folks get ahead?! And how in the world do the rich get richer?!

While working on my taxes, I tried everything humanly possible to lower the outrageous amount I had to pay the IRS, but to no avail. It seems like the number 8 was my unlucky number this year, because I had to pay $8,878.00. Never in my life have I been so broke! It’s impossible to cut corners anymore, because the corners have become a giant hallway!

Because of the ever growing expense of income taxes, property taxes, gasoline, food, and vet bills, I’ve been forced not only to work at my full time job, but to start creating more internet domains which produce more money for me than my full time job. My social life has been NADA - NILTCH, because after I get home from work, I start working on the computer stuff. It’s nothing new that I go to bed no earlier than 1 or 2 in the morning. I’m pretty close to finishing that thing that required I learn c++, and I’ve been working on a FAMILY FRIENDLY Spanish domain I bought a few years ago, but never did anything with it. I’ve also bought three more Spanish domains and hope to start working on them just as soon as I’m finished with the one I’m doing now which has required I create lots of new graphics for it. I understand that most of you don’t understand Spanish, which when spoken correctly, is the most beautiful and romantic language in the world! I’ll post the link here when I’m finished so you can surf it.

2. Thank God my brother finally found a job, which means that my other brothers, a cousin and I won’t have to make his payment on the house in Oceanside, CA. There’s some bad news for us though. Since it’s an adjustable rate, the interest rate went from 6 1/4% up to 10.4%, which means we have to pay approximately $1,600 per month more. Banks aren’t refinancing unless you have about $36,000 in a savings account, which we do not! It gets even worse, because we have another house rented in Costa Mesa.

What it all comes down to is, that we’re in danger of losing one of the houses! Let’s see what happens.

3. My little Jewely had an operation on the 12th of this month. She had a tumor on her one of her boobies. Poodles are very susceptible to breast cancer, especially if they haven’t ever had puppies and haven’t been spayed. I went ahead and told my vet to spay her if that was the case.

The white cat that I have never been able to trap with my trapper to have her spayed, had kittens again!! She is a very strange cat. I never told you this before, but she had some more kittens about 6 months ago, and she killed them all! When they were a little bigger, she’d take them to God knows where, never to be seen again! So what Grandpa and I will do this time is keep a watchful eye on the kittens, and when their big enough to be fed with a dropper, we’ll bring them inside to take care of them ourselves. I THINK I now have about 38 cats outside!!

4. I’M SO TOUCHED! There have been a few who have sent me a LJ Nudge to start posting. Another thing, because I’ve been so overwhelmed with work this year, I’ve been so RUDE for not thanking so many of you who sent me real life gifts for Valentine’s Day! I’ve been planning on posting the pictures of these gifts, and I WILL DO SO very soon, and please expect a little something from me in your snail mail soon. I’ll let you know when I’ve sent it. I also want to thank those who sent me a LJ card for Valentine’s Day. Expect a card from me, too, VERY SOON!

5. Sunday Mass with Pope Benedict XVI - I’ve recorded EVERYTHING about our beloved Pope Benedict XVI stay in the U.S.A. In a matter of just a week, I’ve grown to love him just as much as I loved Pope John Paul II.

As for Bill Maher, may the beast rot in hell for saying such blasphemous things about this holy man! I DISPISE YOU Bill Maher!

And how in the world do the rich get richer?!

They lend money they don't have, speculate on sure things (precious metal and land values almost always go up in the long-term), and then are smart enough to put it all into tax havens. I hope you used the absurd deductions for gambling. :)

I understand that most of you don’t understand Spanish, which when spoken correctly, is the most beautiful and romantic language in the world!

The music should be better, then.

I come from Irish Protestants, but have a benign view of Catholics and the Pope. I'm even a little saddened to see their parochial schools close.

Yeah... We're definitely in a recession...

*hugs 'n' love*

While I don't agree with Maher's stance on bashing Catholicism and people who believe in God, I will say (and I am a Catholic) that he is dead on about this Pope who has proven to be a tyrant for gays and others who don't fit his warped view as God's chosen people.

How I miss John Paul II.
Apr. 21st, 2008 01:08 am (UTC)
I had no idea Pope Benedict bashed gays...
I also miss him Sweety Pie. John Paul was one of a kind, and sadly, we'll never have another one like him again.

I had no idea Pope Benedict bashed gays. Hopefully he'll see one day that all humans are Gods creation!

Umm, how long have you been Catholic?

All my life. Er...why?

Re: I had no idea Pope Benedict bashed gays...
Because when HASN'T the church bashed gays?

Even my favorite Pope was intransigent on homosexuality.

In his 2005 book Memory and Identity, John Paul labeled homosexuality an “ideology of evil,” saying when discussing gay marriage that, “It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man.”

Ideology of evil??? Isn't that pretty much gay bashing? And Benedict is the keeper of doctrine and is even harsher on the subject.

Come on? How can you not know this?

That's ok. I took it for granted you weren't a blithering idiot. I guess that makes us even.

Chuckles, you never let up. So your next trick is to pretend to take the high ground, eh?

And to give yourself the impression of being above the fray you envelop yourself in a quote by good old Jiddu. Ahh, instant karma shield, eh?

Out of ammo, so you put on the loincloth and pretend you're Gandhi..too funny.

Re: I had no idea Pope Benedict bashed gays...
I really didn't know. I mean, I'm fully aware that the Bible condems homosexuality, but I never knew that either of these popes bashed homosexuality, because I've never read their books.

Hopefully you took as many deductions as you were ALLOWED, if not due. Like listing your car on your schedule C, taking a home office deduction, writing off a lot of your gas and maintainance, etc.. I know you can take off all of your Internet and phone expenses being that you are an internet developer. There are so many deductions that people miss due to the complex nature of our tax laws, forms, and formulations. Pity that we don't have a simplified tax system. :/
Apr. 21st, 2008 05:47 am (UTC)
Not only did I list all the things you mentioned, but my car insurance, car repairs, car rentals for trips, and airplane fares. I deducted a percentage from my computer room, utilities, pet groomer and pet supplies, 2nd hand clothing and dust collectors which I ended up taking to Goodwill for another tax deduction. I didn't add cleaning items because I forgot to save those receipts.

I spent quite a lot of money last year on house repairs, but they don't take those anymore.

Yes, it sure is a pity they don't come up with something more simplified. I did the long form and I had papers coming out of my ears! Oh, and I thought my eyes would remain cross eyed forever! :o)

Sure hope you did well with yours!
Apr. 21st, 2008 09:29 am (UTC)

Apr. 25th, 2008 04:04 pm (UTC)
I'm still sick about having had to pay so much, but thank God I had more or less an idea, so I saved a little each month in order to pay these outrageous taxes.

Yes, I, as well as the others, are very happy that he found a job again.

Jewely is doing great after her operation. She sends you lots of love barks! :o)

1. The more you work, the more you’re penalized, the more you're screwed. Why can't we poor folks get ahead?! And how in the world do the rich get richer?!
You can thank the Democrats and their "progressive" tax system wherein one who makes more pays a higher percentage of one's income in tax.

Apr. 21st, 2008 02:57 pm (UTC)
Um, what Democrat authored tax legislation has been passed recently for you to make that assessment? Why would she be thanking the Democrats, since they haven't been able to fight Bush's veto on anything that wasn't a bi-partisan bill. And last I remeber there's little bi-partisanship when it comes to taxes.
Apr. 21st, 2008 03:40 pm (UTC)
It is not a recent thing. It has been that way for decades. Bush has nothing to do with it. Try doing a little research and learning a little history.

The more one makes, the higher one's tax rate. This is referred to as a "progressive tax" because the tax rate get progressively higher.

The progressive tax rate structure was pushed through Congress by Democrats whose argument was literally "If you make more, you can afford to pay at a higher rate."

The progressive tax has been at the heart of a number of tax reform arguments including, but not limited to flat tax, fair tax, and flat rate tax.

Now, go pull your head out of your ass and learn that the U.S. has been in existence a couple of hundred years and that tax laws are older than you are.
Apr. 21st, 2008 06:01 pm (UTC)
part 1
Actually I understand the argument all too well. It's the reason I left the Democratic party 10 years ago, but what did the Republicans do when it came down to argue for flat taxes (and the fairtax as Steve King or Mike Huckabee suggested is fairly new and irrelevant at this point since it's still looking for legs)? The Bush administration put more effort on helping the welathy with an almost immediate cut on both the Capital Gains/Dividends Tax and Estate Tax (and before you even try to say I'm against these cuts I'm not..I'm against the priority given to these over the income tax) Capital Gains was at 20% and went to 15% fairly quickly in the phased reduction, yet income taxes for the middle tier 38,00-90,000 ranges were seeing a more gradual decrease and with Bush's original plan would have capped at with less than a 5% reduction on that rate to about 35%.

Yet according to the last tax rate of the Republican Congress once you stepped out of that 90k range the rate goes lower as you'll see inthe table below. That means millionaires were paying a lesser tax rate and as with almost ANY tax legislation whether it's Democrat or Republican the burden falls onthe middle class. This was Bush's tax plan not the Democrats.

And while I agree with a low Capital Gains tax in the 15% range I disagree witht he failure to close the loopholes that allows billionaires to pay the 15% rate instead of the 37.9% they would have under the income tax. Thus , as Warrent Buffet once pointed out, gave him an unfair tax advantage over his own secreary that was paying well over 30%. He didn't even seek the tax shelter that's how his income tax came out.

Apr. 21st, 2008 06:01 pm (UTC)
part 2
And any argument about fairtax or flat tax is moot concerning Savannah's tax payment for 2007. Because I don't disagree 100% on the need to make fairer tax reforms as someone who falls in that middle tier.

Here's the tax rate under the GOP controlled congress of 2005.

Adjusted gross

Tax rate

Components of tax

$0 to $8,200

15.3% payroll, 0% income tax
$8,201 to $15,500

Re: How do the Rich get Richer?
Can't forget munincipal bonds and capital gains. If you play your cards right (I never can, grr), you can make a mint doing that with taxes at a lower rate than the standard tax rates.

Re: How do the Rich get Richer?
Seems like you're trying to play against the system. You can't beat the system. It's stacked against you.

If you want to play that game, then you might be better off doing it from a foreign entity. But it takes time and money to structure such an operation. And you have to make it look legitimate to fly under the radar.

But overall, if your objective is to accumulate Federal Reserve Notes, then you're shooting yourself in the foot.

And what I advocate may not necessarily be legal, but it is quite lawful.

Funny that word "legal."

Funnier still is the concept of "legalization."

Think about it.

Why would something need to be "legalized?"

Sort of like the word "license," maybe?

And if you don't know, asking for a license is asking permission to do something. No freeman ever has to ask permission to do something that is naturally lawful.

By and by, had they accepted as a deductable the money I spent on home improvements on my own house, I would have been so much better off.

Bill Maher is on record as being an atheist who hates religion: all organized religions. He has made fun of all the major religions. I have heard him make cracks about Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Pagans/Wiccans and even Buddhist. The only religion he holds sacred is his own: atheism.

But he does have a point. This Pope had a major role in the church's cover up of the child molestation cases by priest. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/apr/24/children.childprotection
