Cigarette Smoking Ban

Playgirl's Most Befitting Quote For Today:

“There's so much pollution in the air now that if it weren't
for our lungs there'd be no place to put it all.”
- Robert Orben

A bill has been proposed to ban people from smoking in their car, if children under 18 are present.

I don't smoke, so this law wouldn't affect me, but this affects my health so much MORE than 2nd hand smoking.

So why hasn't a bill been proposed, banning this, ALSO??!!

Your thoughts please.

I'd much rather inhale 2nd hand smoking than all that junk I see in all the photos!

Before I'd make a judgement, i'd want to see some good data and research (by independant researchers) on the effects of smoke in a car on children. Compare that versus the risks of other issues and the prevention measures made for them. Then, if action is deemed warrented due legitimate risk above other issues, start discussing the powers and rights of parents to raise their children. Then we could start actually discussing the wording of the law, because most of these things are knee jerk reactionary legislation against something that never takes into account consequences or even legal wording (such as the WA state anti-smoking law).

"So why hasn't a bill been proposed, banning this, ALSO??!!"

Because, all "feel good" talk to the contrary, we can't live without whatever comfort that smoke provides.
May. 21st, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)
You're right about that. We've all become spoiled brats!

We recycle just about everything in my town. My favorite thing is people who leave their engines running while running about sorting all their recyclables.

Reading all these comments...I'm surprised noone's traced any problems back to Bill and Hillary Clinton. Every problem on earth can be traced back to them...right?
May. 21st, 2007 03:51 pm (UTC)
If only everybody took the time to recycle, it would help Mother Earth so much!

My city just recently started giving us these large blue trash cans especially for materials that can be recycled. This made me very, very happy!

Where in the world have you been? I've missed you!!

it sounds nice on paper but i don't see how they would be able to enforce it. pragmatically speaking, i don't see it working.

Dear God. Can you say PROHIBITION all over again?? Why don't they just make the cigarettes them selves illegal so all us smokers can start a black market and fill our more than overcrowded jails with more people for stupid reasons.
May. 20th, 2007 01:32 am (UTC)

The real reason, apart from the first reason listed by dagulfsghost, is that the cigarette companies have long since diversified. They're freakishly HUGE, and cover more than just tobacco.

Take for instance, RJR Nabisco. Nabisco is (or rather WAS) a major food products company, for cereal, cookies, you name it. When companies get as large and powerful as this one, it becomes extraordinarily difficult to legislate against them when they can simply line the pockets of some politician for a total that shocks any of us, but to the company is a drop in a bucket.

Furthermore, government legislation gets gun-shy with committing to legislature that might tempt such a company to start lobbying the interests of a political opponent.

I never knew this! You are so intelligent Stevie! I'm so glad you're my LJ friend!

Cause power companies own our politicains souls. So none of them will touch big oil, coal or nuclear power companies.

Yeah! Which, since I use electricity, and this post would be evidence you do as well, I consider a good thing.

May. 20th, 2007 04:55 am (UTC)
Well, the top one is the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant, so the only thing coming out from the top is steam. Nuclear plants don't generate any air pollution at all. Not even CO2 emissions. They do produce radioactive waste, but there are ways to deal with that if there's political will to do so.
May. 21st, 2007 04:06 pm (UTC)
Well darn! So it looks like one of my LJ friends was right about it! :o(

I'll just have to look for other pictures that produce pollution. Thanks for the info.! :o)

The top picture is of the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant. There is no pollution that picture, what you are seeing is water vapor.

As for the others, are you willing to go without cars, manufactured goods, and electricity.

It is easier to go without cigarettes, but hard to turn the clock back 200 years.
May. 21st, 2007 05:05 pm (UTC)
Oh, and there are a lot of laws governing emissions from factories, power plants, and vehicles.
