KEY WEST, ERNEST HEMINGWAY, LIGHT HOUSE, SPONGE MAN

Here I'm admiring everything around me. So clean and peaceful! As I mentioned before, I would love to spend the rest of my life there, but it's just too expensive.

This man figure is covered in real sea sponge. Sea sponge is very popular and common in Key West. I can't believe I forgot to bring some back home. Real sea sponge is so expensive!

This house belonged to Ernest Hemingway and is now a tourist attraction. This light house is next the house. He used to say that he could always find his house after coming home drunk just by looking for the light house! haaaa

He left the house to his cats. Rooster's run wild in Key West, and it is against the law to hurt a rooster, chicken or cat that runs wild. The many stray cats do not bother the roosters or the chickens.

You see many shacks like this one, right next to mansions! Look how beautiful this rooster is. You see them on top of trees everywhere! Look at the tree next to the shack and you will see a chicken and rooster there.

I just had to take a pic of this gorgeous boat and these strange and colorful fish!

We stayed at the Casa Marina. It was beautiful.

I do, too. The chickens and roosters, as well as the cats, in Key West look healthier than we humans! haaaa

It was so funny because I kept seeing cats and chickens walking side by side as if they were best friends!

I love key west as well, my grandmother owns a vacation house there and I enjoy going there when I can. I'm trying to convince her to give me the house so I can move there, otherwise I couldn't afford to live there ether.

You are so lucky! Try your best to convince her, 'cause if you do, you'll be living among beauty, peace and tranquility!

The houses are so incredibly expensive over there, but I can see why.

the good ole days!
When i lived in Key Largo, we didn't much go down to Key West due to several factors. One was the only road down there was slow going; 40 mph in some places due to the crossing of the Keys deer. At night those stretches go down to 30 mph and the cops wait to catch speeders or "DUIs" in waiting. Our favorite saying was "Key West: go down on vacation, come back on PROBATION!"

Starting in late October many homeless people flock down there from NY and the upper east coast because they can sleep on the beaches and panhandle. And lots of boat squatters (folks who live on houseboat permanently parked in docks) empty their sewage into the water, contaminating the waters.

But on the plus side I did like buying the huge sponges and fancy shells I could use as appetizer plates. I could live on conch chowder or fritters. There were great artists I would work with; there was a neat artist co-op just off of Duval. I worked at the World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada where they have Hemmingway's boat, the Pilar on display. We would give tours on it. Yeah, it's expensive to live there but you work most of the time to enjoy it. But it was lonely there; if you didn't bring someone with you all you met were visitors. And they usually have someone already. But I do miss it. You should have checked out the flea markets and hrift stores. You'd be AMAZED at the wonders you find. Many well-off people donate boxes of TREASURE because they don't need it.

That made me laugh!! haaaa

We were there for too short a time, or I would have loved to go to those flea markets you mention. I didn't know they existed until you mentioned it. I can just imagine all the treasures one could buy there!

Thank you for a most enjoyable read, I learned much more about it.

Maybe someday you can post pictures of those shells you use as appetizer plates. I bet they look beautiful and original!
Hugs and kisses Sweety Pie and I hope you have a relaxing and wonderful Sunday!

Hurray, Hemingway
I am reading a book of Hemingway's, THE SUN ALSO RISES. It's about the Lost Generation, and sometimes I feel exactly as they felt.

A beautiful setting befits a beautiful lady, mi amor. I hope you did not tarry too long, for surely the tourists would have been drawn to you and expended all their film long before thoughts of marinas or sunsets or Hemingway...or cocks, no matter how magnificent they are.

All my love!

Re: Hurray, Hemingway
Why do you feel as they felt in The Sun Also Rises? I didn't particularly like one of the characters in the book.

Les Misérables and The Scarlet Letter are among my favorites. I hate to admit it but both these books caused me to cry like a baby.

You are so sweet. I'm afraid all the tourists were more interested in seeing the beauty and wonders of Key West, than they were in me.

The sunset was my favorite, so magnificent. I'll never forget it.

I'm reading the book and I'm terribly impressed.
Con mucho Cariño para tí duoraven.

Glad you enjoyed Key West. It is totally different. Did you to any topless/nude sunbathing?

Yes, I have seen Hemingway's house, his 6-toed cats, the lighthouse, and many other places there. It is very nice. But different.
